Clinical Medicine - Contd . RADIATION AND THE STRUCTURE OF BONE
نویسنده
چکیده
Whenever the body is irradiated, for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, a considerable amount of bone and bone marrow is inevitably included in the field of the radiation beam. Furthermore, many of the radioisotopes used clinically become incorporated in bone, sometimes to a high degree. The physical consideration of this irradiation of bone is complex because (a) the increased radiation absorption in bone, compared with that in soft tissues, depends markedly on radiation energy, (b) the deposition of radioisotopes in bone is frequently very non-uniform and (c) the ionizing particles (secondary electrons released by X-rays and oc and 3 particles from radioisotopes) which distribute the radiation energy within bone, have ranges which are of the same order of magnitude as the dimensions of the microscopic structures of the bone anatomy. Three facets of studies relating to bone will be described, two of which are also of interest outside the immediate field of radiology.

THEORETICAL MODELS FOR DETERMINING THE VELOCITY OF ULTRASOUND IN BONE AND BONE SAMPLES
Currently available non-invasive clinical methods for diagnosing osteoporosis are mainly associated with ionizing radiation. Ultrasonic assessment of bone disease is a more recent technology. A theoretical explanation for the relationship between ultrasonic parameters and bone structure is necessary. Thus, two types of bone samples of perspex (HAP) and perspex-glass beads were produced. Ea...
متن کاملDemonstration of melorheostosis on bone scan
Background: Melorheostosis has been discussed infrequently in the nuclear medicine literature. A 25-year-old female patient presented with a one-year history of b:union: pain, sclerotic change and skin pigmentation on the left big toe interphalangeal joint. Ulceration, poor healing and hyperkeratoses of the wound were noted post debridement. The plain film of the left foot incidentally showed m...
متن کاملEstimating the radiation dose of non-radiation workers from nuclear medicine patients
Introduction: As a valuable imaging modality, Nuclear Medicine (NM) indications is raising in clinical practice. The remained portion administrated radioactive material in patients’ tissues is a critical issue, especially when the procedure is performed in hospitalized patients, where the non-radiation workers present. The aim of this study was evaluation the dose of non-radia...
متن کاملIn vivo Analysis of H2AX Phosphorylation Induced by γ-Radiation
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Exposure to ionizing radiation in modern societies is inevitable and can cause a variety of adverse health effects such as cancer and birth defects. Therefore, a reliable, repeatable and sensitive method is required for evaluation of radiation exposure. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of hist...
متن کاملTrabecular bone changes induced by fast neutrons versus gamma rays in mice
Background: The trabecular bone changes in the tibia of C3H/HeN mice were measured 12 weeks after whole body irradiation with various doses of fast neutrons (0-2.4 Gy) or 137Cs-generated gamma-rays (0-6 Gy). Materials and Methods: Serum calcium, phosphorus, estradiol concentration and alkaline phosphatase activity were measured. Tibiae were anal...
